The International Space Station (ISS) is a large spacecraft in orbit around the Earth. It serves as a research vessel for countless experiments, as well as a home to many astronauts and cosmonauts. Construction began in November 1998 when the Russian control module Zarya was connected to the U.S. Unity node. The first crew arrived on Nov. 2, 2000, since that time humanity has held a constant presence in space aboard the ISS. there are currently people aboard the ISS. The ISS is equip to support up to 6 persons as well as visitors. The Space station is about the size of a full football field, from solar array to solar array. Inside the station is about the same size as a five bedroom house. On earth the station would weigh close to a million pounds. The primary mission of the ISS is to conduct research that cannot be done anywhere on earth, as well as to study what happens to the human body in microgravity. All of this research will one day help us to live in space and other planets permanently.
